OFFICE CONTACT

Tovatt Architects & Planners is based in Stockholm/Sweden but we work globally. We find our commissions, challenges and clients among people who search for new expressions and solutions for a better world. During the 1980s and 90s we established ourselves on the European market and we have a passionate engagement in projects spanning from Dublin in the west to Moscow in the east. Cultural differences, the nuances in languages and harsh financial limitations have created a deeper understanding for diversity in the creation of new urban environments.  Experiences from abroad influence our Scandinavian projects and our cultural heritage often bring vital knowledge to our foreign partners.  We know that there are different realities in different countries, differences in regulations and urban density. However, we do know that there are basic human and social mechanisms and dreams which tie us all together and this insight forms the basis in our design for the future.

During the last decade, Tovatt Architects & Planners has won a large number of international competitions in urban design and our ongoing projects comprise schools, residential, commercial and cultural buildings. We build firm and strong relationships with our clients in all our projects and we never settle with less than a personal contribution, aiming at making the world into a better place…

GATCHINA RUSSIA

Gatchina is a medium-sized historic town with Imperial past, just outside St. Petersburg. Here, Tovatt Architects & Planners received the commission to developed a masterplan and a comprehensive design concept, from infrastructure through landscape design to apartment layouts for the local developer, LST Gatchina. Our design has addressed two main challenges.

The first was to develop a masterplan that integrated the new buildings into the existing – and somewhat dilapidated - neighborhood. The goal is to generate an overall improvement for the area as a whole. The urban design introduced a firm structure: street network at the periphery plus green and public areas for social uses in the inner parts. The new and the existing blended together into a seamless, meaningful whole.

The second challenge was to develop a design strategy that could combine the client’s construction methods, using prefabricated concrete panels from the local factory, with a strong sense of identity.  A common theme provided a framework for the entire area. At the same time, unique variations on the theme provided personality and character for each individual block.

Our Gatchina project has recently obtained planning consent (summer 2013) and the next design stage will commence in the autumn.

KIRUNA SWEDEN

The city of Kiruna rests on one of the largest iron ore-bodies in the world. The pure existence of this city – located north of the polar circle – is closely tied to the mining activity. As the mining expands below the city itself and as this threatens both inhabitants and buildings, the city needs to move. In the spring of 2012, an international architect’s competition was announced and Tovatt architects and Planners (TAP) was selected as one of 10 participants. TAP was design team leader during the competition stage in a recognized consultant team with representatives from all over the European Union. Our proposal illustrated the extraordinary challenges’ associated with moving a city of 23 000 inhabitants. Our urban design, its density and proposed implementation were taken to a high level of detailing, comprising strategies for moving large scale buildings as well as well defined social and environmental strategies. The urban design proposed for Kiruna has its roots and finds precedents in the historic city structure of northern Europe; streets and urban spaces are well defined with clear hierarchy of connection to open landscape and remaining fragments of preserved parts of the city. Although we were not lucky enough to win the competition, our proposal won the hearts of the inhabitants of Kiruna and it received high grades for its urban design strategies and visual expression.

Annedal SWEDEN

A residential area including parks, cafes, schools etc is positioned to the northeast area of Stockholm. The masterplan is based on the winning proposal that Tovatt Architects and Planners submitted in 2003. We are presently designing three residential blocks for Svenska bostäder.

The U shaped building and ‘park’ blocks are placed between the areas central park and the small dock area at the northern extremity of the development. The buildings have a range of heights from 4 to 8 floor levels with a playful roofscape.

Two buildings within the block will be built as ‘passive house’, eg requiring no heating energy other than passive solar heating, and heat generated from lighting and household electrical equipment. This places a high demand on the buildings insulation efficiency.

WIEN AUSTRIA

After winning the master plan competition for the new urban development SEESTADT ASPERN on the former airfi eld in the Northeast of Vienna/ Austria, currently one of the largest urban extension areas in Europe – Tovatt Architects and Planners was fi x starter in the competitions for the first building phase. Since the wining proposal was presented in 2005 the offi ce has worked closely with the city, experts and investors to develop and improve the plan to its current stage.

Our design for the lot D10 of 10.000m2 comprises 314 residential units, partly designed to allow also for other uses such as small practices and offi ces. On the ground fl oor 3350m3 commercial above 400 car parking spaces are provided. The development is partly government-fi nanced and net areas of fl ats and building costs are limited. Designed as low energy house as well as using Earth heat and providing space for solar panels on the roof it will be part of the ongoing project “smart city”. We have applied for planning permission last December and will be ready to start on site already in June 2013!

SLAVIANKA RUSSIA

After a stage by stage completion of the Masterplan in 2010 for the fi rst phase called Gutenborg and a municipal acceptance of the urban design in December the second stage design work for an architectural concept commenced for the so called Big Slavyanka early 2011 . Tovatt Architects and Planners have been commissioned to undertake this assignment and it has been done in collaboration with Paju Arkitektur & Landskap. Stage 2 includes two carefully selected pilot schemes and a more elaborated landscape design across vital areas of the masterplan as well as a more detailed design for the central areas. This will establish key qualities and principles to be developed and implemented throughout the masterplan.

Sånga Säby SWEDEN

The conference complex Sånga-Säby situated on the island Färingsö in lake Mälaren. As a compliment to the existing buildings Tovatt Architects and Planners has designed a new auditorium. The new auditorium will increase the possibility to have larger conference groups and create a new appearance for the building. The proposed extension is a combination of new elements and use of the existing structure; a section of the upper floor of the existing building is demolished to make room for the new volume. This new buildings structure is kept independent allowing continued activities in the lower level while the extension is under construction.

The new Auditorium will be the first a visitor meets and a glassed wall behind the podium will present the activities as well as give a framed view of the oak trees that stand in the gentle slope leading down to the lake edge.

Årsta SWEDEN

In the first phase of the planned new development at Årstafältet in Stockholm we are, on behalf of Abacus, designing apartments in a block shared with Järntorget/Grad Arkitekter.

The main design concept is to shift and tilt four higher buildings to maximize views and sightlines and the flow of light into the block.

Inspiration for the design of the facades is mainly from the buildings around Årsta torg. The upper parts of the facades are plastered and coloured in diagonals intensifying the expressive forms. The plinth floors are tiled in different colours and patterns.

LINKÖPING SWEDEN

"Tornet" Linköpings's new landmark is in close proximity to the centre of Linköping, five minutes walk from the main train station. The interface between old and new has been celebrated and an intense and rich environment of contrasts has been developed. The buildings form and façade material is juxtaposed to the low brick warehouse buildings. Together the old and new form a secure and vibrant environment. The completed complex will house a number of uses: office, conference, commercial space, studio workshops and restaurants.

Västerås SWEDEN

The main concept is to connect the new development through a net of diagonal movements across the site. The proposal take hold on the existing urban structure and founded at the same time a new typology - the triangular building. The triangular shape provides for beautiful and efficient apartments and a well shaped network of streets, courtyards and open views. Through theintricate placement of the triangular volumes, a rich sequence of open and closed, private and public spaces is created. The beautiful parkland north of the site, and the large trees in the south west are kept and integrated in the experience of new neighborhood.

Together with the future Developers and the city of Västerås, Tovatt Architects and Planners are now working on the task of taking the concept into realization.

Västerås SWEDEN

The task set by Västerås city authority has been to present a vision for Västerås. We have been free to make an analysis, and test ideas regarding the development of the city of Västerås. The core idea of the project has been to propose that the railway, creating a barrier from the old city centre to the lakeshore, be raised. By lifting the railway opportunities to make links are greatly improved. At the same time an interesting environment surrounding the railway is created for commercial and cultural use.
